Biography

German soprano. Born in 1972 in Bergneustadt, North Rhine-Westphalia. She showed musical talent from an early age and began taking vocal lessons in 1986. Her first concert took place in 1992.

She graduated from the Cologne University of Music, and after receiving her diploma, she was accepted into the opera company of the Bonn Theater. In the summer of 1999, she won the international vocal competition 'Singer of the World' in Cardiff, which brought the young singer worldwide fame. This was immediately followed by a contract with the Bavarian State Opera, where Harteros made her debut as Agathe in 'Der Freischütz'. At the Bavarian State Opera, she performed roles such as the Countess in 'Le nozze di Figaro', Fiordiligi in 'Così fan tutte', Mimì in 'La bohème', Leonora in 'La forza del destino', Leonora in 'Il trovatore', Maddalena in 'Andrea Chénier', Desdemona in 'Otello', Amelia in 'Simon Boccanegra', Élisabeth de Valois in 'Don Carlos', Alice Ford in 'Falstaff', Elsa in 'Lohengrin', Elisabeth in 'Tannhäuser', Kundry in 'Parsifal', Isolde in 'Tristan und Isolde', the Marschallin in 'Der Rosenkavalier', and the title roles in 'Tosca', 'Manon Lescaut', 'Alcina', and 'Arabella'. In 2007, the Bavarian State Opera awarded her the honorary title of Kammersängerin, and in 2019, it awarded her the Meistersinger medal. In 2009, Opernwelt named her Singer of the Year; in 2013, she was awarded the European Medal. She is a recipient of the International Opera Award for Female Singer of the Year (2015).

She regularly performs at all the leading opera houses in the world, including the Vienna State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Paris Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Norwegian National Opera, New York's Metropolitan Opera, San Diego Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and others. Her repertoire also includes the roles of Violetta in 'La traviata', Eva in 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg', Sieglinde in 'Die Walküre', Freia in 'Das Rheingold', Micaëla in 'Carmen', Elettra in 'Idomeneo', and Donna Anna in 'Don Giovanni'.
